[0.0s] previously on Dumbgeons and Dragons. [2.2s] Hey, how attached are you to the fact of Perseus being a rat? [6.3s] I don't think his being a rat is of particular importance. [10.6s] Great, enough said. [11.9s] Margaret, I'm going on an adventure to find my creator. [17.7s] And if you're not busy, it would be great if you could come. [20.9s] Well, I could go for a little walkabout. [23.4s] I did it! [24.8s] Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you had company. [27.4s] Um. [27.8s] Lex, it's me, Perseus. [30.2s] Perseus? [31.7s] Yeah, it's me! [32.6s] We live in a world of magic and fantasy. [34.7s] We can do whatever we wish. [36.4s] You look over and you see a familiar face, and you're reminded of a kobold [45.7s] whose name is Marvin Dundalfoot. [48.8s] Hey, hey, I could get you a sweet deal. [51.0s] Just look at this watch here. [53.0s] And as you kind of focus on him, he has a feeling that somebody's watching him. [59.4s] He looks over and he sees you, and then you see a look of panic in his eyes. [63.8s] I will, I'll say that later. [67.2s] And he bolts down the street. [68.3s] We've got to follow that kobold. [69.5s] Yeah, follow. [85.3s] Welcome to Dumbgeons and Dragons. [87.0s] We're a D&D 5th Edition Actual Play Podcast, and I'm your dungeon master, Russ More. [91.9s] And with me today is Tom Laird. [94.4s] That's me, and I play Perseus the Rat kind of halfling guy. [99.2s] Also with me, Carla Maxted. [101.2s] That's me, and I play Lex the Frankenstein-y cool monster dude guy. [108.3s] And joining us again today, we can't get rid of him because we love him so much, [112.8s] it's Rev from the Crit Show. [114.8s] Hi, I play Margaret Broadcloak, and I'm still sleeping on Russ's couch. [121.0s] I made you stay for another two weeks after that last one in order to make sure we got [125.5s] this one just right on time. [127.1s] He's like, sorry, we only record this specific story every other week, so just hang out. [132.0s] That's how it works. [133.6s] Yeah, but we got that closet super organized. [136.6s] Thank you for that. [137.8s] Where you can organize people's closets if you really want to is over on Patreon. [142.4s] We'll post a link and you can organize a closet. [145.5s] Why not? [146.6s] Patreon.com slash Dumb Dragoncast. [149.3s] But when you are a patron, you get an episode dedicated to you like today's patron, [155.8s] Ty Zuniga. [157.9s] Hey, thanks, Ty. [159.4s] Thank you, Ty. [161.5s] You can find out more at Patreon.com slash Dumb Dragoncast. [165.0s] And now, fuck it, let's play DND. [173.1s] We pick up with our friends, Lex, Margaret, Perseus, and Arvid, taking chase down the [180.0s] streets of the town of Glickfast, which is at the base of the Baldrick Mountains, [184.9s] pushing their way through the crowd. [186.9s] And now we're going to enter what we call a chase. [189.8s] We've never done this specifically before, and I'm very excited about it, everybody. [195.1s] Look at Russ with his game mechanics. [196.6s] I know. [197.4s] It's very exciting. [198.6s] I feel like Tom and I are both like, oh, no. [201.1s] No, they actually have chase mechanics in the Dungeon Master's Guide. [207.0s] Who knew? [208.2s] Fun. [209.0s] That sounds like an NPC's name. [211.5s] Chase mechanics. [212.4s] Chase mechanics. [214.8s] It's going to be now. [215.7s] Please write that down, Russ. [217.4s] Amazing. [218.2s] Chase mechanics. [220.2s] Got it. [221.6s] I feel like he didn't actually write that down. [223.1s] He just set it in the tone like when you're blowing someone off on the phone [226.6s] and you're like, yeah, 7 p.m. and then. [231.7s] They're on to me. [232.4s] They're on to me. [233.8s] OK, so we'll run down kind of because we've never done this before. [237.4s] We'll run down a little bit of how this is going to work. [240.4s] So a chase requires a quarry and at least one pursuer. [244.1s] So we have a quarry, which is the Kobold Marvum Dundalfoot. [250.6s] And four pursuers in this case. [253.3s] Any participants not already in initiative order must roll initiative. [257.8s] So we're going to get everybody to roll that sweet initiative. [262.9s] Oh, my God. [264.2s] A six. [266.3s] Seventeen. [268.0s] You're much more. [269.1s] You guys are much more. [270.1s] This seven year old woman is much more fleet of foot than my big lumbering body, I guess. [274.7s] It's all right. [275.2s] Arvid got worse. [275.8s] And I guess the halfling was a former rat, so he's pretty good. [279.2s] And you're just a little scurrier. [281.0s] You're so quick. [282.8s] I don't know what you're going to do when you get to the Kobold. [284.8s] Way ahead of the rest of us, but let's see. [287.0s] Very problematic. [289.6s] Marvum was across like a crowded area. [294.4s] By the time Lex set off and we picked up, he's probably 80 feet ahead of Lex. [303.5s] And then Lex took off. [305.2s] Who took off first behind Lex? [307.7s] I did. [308.4s] Margaret will say you're about five feet behind. [313.5s] Perseus and Arvid will say are pretty close to each other. [317.4s] Running the chase. [318.1s] Participants in the chase are strongly motivated to use the dash action every round, [322.5s] which you use your action, which you would normally take to attack or cast a magic spell [328.5s] to move double your speed during the chase. [333.8s] And then pursuers who stop to cast spells and make attacks run the risk of losing their quarry. [338.3s] So you can run 30 feet, but if you cast a spell, they may bolt ahead on their next turn, [342.6s] which means you can't exactly catch them. [344.6s] During the chase, a participant can freely use the dash action a number of times equal to [349.0s] three plus your constitution modifier. [352.4s] Each additional dash action it takes during the chase requires the creature to succeed [357.5s] a DC 10 constitution check at the end of its turn or gain one level of exhaustion. [364.1s] The participant drops out if they reach level five. [367.4s] Since its speed becomes zero, you can also die. [371.9s] Don't do that. [373.4s] A creature can remove levels of exhaustion it gained during the chase by finishing a [378.0s] short or long rest, which we're not going to really worry about right now. [381.9s] So you have free reign of dash until you use up your number? [385.7s] Yeah. [386.2s] And then you have to roll for it? [387.4s] So if you have four, once you hit four, you're donezo. [393.4s] Spells and attacks. [394.1s] A chase participant can make an attack or cast a spell against other creatures within range. [398.4s] Apply the normal rules for cover terrain and all that stuff. [401.8s] Chase participants can't normally make opportunity attacks against each other since [405.7s] they all are assumed to be moving in the same direction. [408.1s] So if you catch up to them and they move out of range, just based on how initiative works, [413.8s] you can't then swipe at them the same way opportunity attacks would work. [419.4s] Ending a chase if one side stops. [422.1s] That ends the chase. [424.3s] If neither side gives up, the quarry makes a stealth check at the end of each round [429.3s] after every participant in the chase has taken its turn. [432.1s] The result is compared to the passive wisdom perception. [435.8s] So if they make a stealth check and nobody sees them disappear, you lose them. [441.5s] So that said, can I get everybody's passive perception, please? [444.8s] 24. [447.2s] Wow. [448.4s] Good fucking luck, Marvam. [451.1s] Nine. [453.0s] Oh wow. [453.7s] 22. [454.2s] He's just got those little baby eyes. [457.3s] 22, 24. [458.3s] So we're never going to lose and Arvind is 13. [462.8s] At the end of each person's turn, I'm going to get you to roll a d20, [467.9s] which is going to cause a complication for the next person. [474.2s] We shall begin. [477.0s] The four of you take off down the street following Marvam. [479.8s] He's pushing out of the way. [480.7s] He says, move, move, get out of the way, get out of the way. [482.7s] And he dashes ahead. [484.0s] So he moves 60 feet, just bolting through the streets, dodging and weaving as he goes. [491.4s] At the end of his turn, he's going to roll a d20, which is going to be a 14. [498.6s] No complication occurs. [500.6s] Perseus, what do you do? [502.2s] So you are currently 90 feet behind him. [507.7s] I dash. [508.6s] I dash the living hell out of it, Russ. [510.4s] All right. [510.8s] And you are halfling, so you move 50. [513.4s] Let's get, yep, 50. [515.0s] Okay, and roll a d20 for me, please. [518.0s] Okay, it's an 11. [520.2s] Perseus, you charge ahead. [522.6s] Margaret, it's your turn. [524.2s] Yeah, I will dash as well, start running through the crowd, [527.4s] trying to chase after Marvam. [529.8s] Okay, so you dash ahead 60. [531.4s] So you are within 25 feet at your new current position. [535.3s] Roll a d20 for me, please. [539.4s] One. [544.2s] Okay. [544.4s] That's never a sound you want your DM to make. [547.2s] Lex, so you head off. [549.8s] Margaret and Perseus kind of bolt ahead and are running past you. [555.1s] What do you do? [557.0s] I also dash. [558.8s] Okay, you begin to take off, running full tilt. [562.1s] You see Marvam. [563.0s] You're catching up to him. [564.0s] Make a dexterity check, please. [568.2s] That is a 20. [569.1s] As you're running, this huge horse cart jumps out in front of you across street. [577.1s] You do get over it. [578.1s] How do you get over it? [580.5s] Maybe I slide under it. [581.9s] Maybe I like grab the thing and slide between the wheels, [585.0s] like be first and then like get up and keep running. [587.7s] Real fast and furious stuff. [589.3s] That's exactly. [592.2s] Yeah, you as without losing a beat, you slide under and you [596.5s] are now within 20 feet of Marvam. [599.6s] I roll a d20, please. [602.7s] Two. [604.7s] Okay, it's Arvid's turn. [606.7s] Arvid is following as quickly as he can, his robes flowing behind him. [612.4s] As he's trying to keep pace with you, you slide underneath this trolley, this horse cart. [619.2s] He tries to go around it and there's this huge crowd that is just moving in behind it. [624.6s] He gets blocked and he's slowed by 10 feet. [631.6s] I was really hoping there'd be like a farmer stand with a bunch of oranges. [636.9s] Oranges everywhere as he crashes into it. [639.6s] Are moving panes of glass somehow? [641.8s] Sure, yeah. [642.6s] Good option as well. [644.6s] He has rolled an 18, so there is no complication for Marvam. [649.9s] Marvam looks behind and sees everybody gaining on him. [655.3s] He takes a quick turn, shoots down a side street and is running as fast as he can. [663.4s] He is also dashing. [665.1s] Okay, and how far away from him am I now? [668.2s] So you're 100 feet. [670.9s] So yeah, this little halfling legs is not a great thing for me. [676.4s] Okay, yeah, I guess I'll dash again and try to get to that corner that he turned down. [681.8s] You absolutely make up. [683.0s] He's about 50 feet ahead of you now. [685.9s] You're losing ground on him at this point. [689.0s] Roll the d20, please. [692.2s] 10. [693.4s] Okay, Margaret, you are currently 85 feet behind, so he's taking a sharp turn. [702.0s] Make a dexterity saving throw. [707.4s] 16. [708.6s] As you come around this corner, falling behind Perseus and Marvam, [712.5s] these vendors are right around the corner and you narrowly miss running right into them. [718.4s] One of them, you know, you kind of clip his arm as you're running by [722.5s] and he yells out to you and says, watch where you're going there. [725.6s] And I actually have one of his apples from his carton. [728.1s] I throw a coin over my shoulder as I go. [732.2s] Awesome. [734.7s] And roll a d20, please. [738.2s] Two. [740.0s] Sweet rolls. [741.5s] You guys are killing it. [743.5s] Lex. [744.2s] I'm going to dash again. [745.7s] You're around the corner. [747.8s] There's the guy yelling who Margaret just kind of clipped. [751.5s] A coin is flying through the air. [754.1s] You're catching up and passing Perseus who looks like he's maybe running out of breath. [759.7s] And the further down you go, like the crowd begins to get, it's just filling up the street. [769.5s] So make either an athletics or an acrobatics check as you're trying to move your way through this crowd. [777.0s] Well, let's say athletics. [778.5s] So that's a 23. [780.6s] Okay. [783.9s] I do a handstand over the crowd. [786.9s] Well, I mean, yeah, basically how athletics works because of strengths [790.3s] is you're just shoving people out of the way. [794.2s] I'm like a big linebacker, right? [795.8s] I'm just like barreling my way through this crowd. [798.5s] It's that scene where we just see like from the crowd's point of view [801.7s] and just people flying into the air, but we don't see you. [806.4s] So you're making way for Arvid who is trailing a little bit behind. [809.8s] Now roll a d20, please. [813.9s] Nine. [814.9s] Arvid finally pushes his way through the crowd that he was working through. [819.0s] When a guard sees him running and yells out to try and stop him. [825.9s] Hey, you stop there. [828.7s] Seems like somebody he has mistaken him for somebody else. [832.3s] I'll let you folks decide if he continues to move, [835.1s] he may be attacked by the guard or we could have him stop and deal with the guard, [840.5s] which would take him probably out. [842.8s] I don't know. [843.4s] What do you think Arvid would do? [844.6s] I don't I feel like he makes some fucking awkward small talk with a guard, to be honest. [849.9s] Yeah, like and they would just let him go. [853.1s] Okay, Arvid taken back stops in front of this guard who is holding a spear in his hand. [860.7s] You look behind you, Lex, you see him stopped talking to the guard. [865.5s] Nothing has happened for Marvam who dashes again [869.1s] and he is going to roll for Perseus, which is a five. [873.1s] So Perseus, you're trailing ever so farther behind. [877.1s] Make a dexterity saving throw and tell me what you do. [881.1s] Okay, it's a 19. [883.9s] Okay, are you dashing? [885.8s] Are you trying to do something? [886.7s] What are you what are you doing? [888.5s] How close is Lex to me? [891.3s] Lex is 30 feet ahead of you. [895.4s] I really wish it was 20 feet. [897.9s] I have it written down here. [899.2s] I have to follow it. [900.3s] It's a chase. [901.6s] No, fair enough. [903.1s] All right. [903.5s] Well, that changes what I'm going to do then. [905.0s] Hang on. [905.3s] Will I figure something else out? [906.8s] No, because you're falling behind. [908.2s] Nobody's in 20 within 20 feet of you at this moment. [910.7s] But I mean, I kind of had the first step. [912.9s] So I mean, you can move 30 feet and then do something still. [917.5s] Well, I can only move 25 feet. [919.4s] That would put you within range of Margaret. [922.8s] Okay, I'll do it. [923.9s] I'll I'll move up to Margaret and I will cast Spider Climb on Margaret. [931.1s] Yes, Betty White. [933.2s] So until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch gains the ability to move up down [936.9s] and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings while leaving its hands free. [941.1s] Also gains a climbing speed equal to its walking speed. [943.5s] So if there's anything that Margaret then needs to get over top of, [947.2s] I feel like she can do it pretty easily. [948.7s] I think so. [949.4s] All right. [950.8s] So you've moved 25 feet, which places you 75 feet now behind Marvam. [957.1s] I forgot to roll the stealth stuff. [959.7s] So we'll do that at the end of the next one. [962.6s] But Margaret, you now have Spider Climb. [965.4s] So roll a d20 there, Perseus. [968.8s] Go get him, Margaret. [970.3s] And that's a 12. [971.9s] Nothing impedes you this round. [973.9s] What do you do with your newfound spider abilities? [978.7s] So is the fleeing cobalt like in a straight line in front of us right now? [985.9s] Yeah, it's a relatively packed crowd. [989.1s] But yeah, you can see his head kind of bobbing up and down [991.8s] as he's kind of peeking behind him as he's running down the street. [995.9s] Okay. [996.5s] So yeah, I'm going to dash again. [1001.6s] And I think because we aren't making, like we're not catching up. [1004.3s] All we're doing is kind of keeping the same distance. [1006.7s] So far you're even keel, yeah. [1009.7s] So I think that having been given this gift by Perseus, [1013.5s] I'm actually going to action surge and move again [1018.3s] so that I can run past him and get in front of him. [1021.5s] Okay, so that puts you 15 feet ahead of him if you take the full movement. [1029.1s] Yeah, I'll take the full movement that way. [1031.3s] Next time if he gets past, I might be able to catch up to him again. [1035.4s] But I'm going to try to like stop and block him now. [1037.8s] Okay. [1039.1s] So you are trying to block for his next movement. [1042.5s] He's going to have disadvantage on that stealth check [1044.9s] because you're right in front of him. [1046.9s] And if you could roll me a d20 for Lex. [1051.5s] Eight. [1052.4s] Lex, as you're running down, you see Margaret take this huge jolt [1056.3s] and get out in front of Marvam. [1059.0s] And out in front of you, a hunched over old man comes out and steps in your way. [1067.1s] Then he's reaching his hand out for a coin. [1069.5s] Could you just spare just a little bit? [1073.0s] So you have to make either an athletics, an acrobatics, [1078.0s] or an intimidation check to slip past this beggar. [1081.7s] Okay, well, it's going to be acrobatics [1083.3s] because I don't want to just push over this old man. [1085.9s] Get out of here, jerk. [1089.4s] 18 for acrobatics. [1092.0s] So I can like twist around him, hopefully. [1094.7s] Yeah, absolutely. [1095.6s] You twist around him. [1096.6s] And as you do so, he kind of double takes and looks and says, [1100.0s] well, fuck you too. [1105.4s] Roll a d20, please. [1106.7s] Oh, sorry. [1107.2s] You're dashing. [1108.2s] Yeah. [1108.8s] Yeah, I did. [1110.3s] 20. [1113.4s] Okay. [1113.9s] Nothing happens for... [1116.5s] Marvam's out. [1117.5s] Nothing happens for Marvam. [1118.9s] So we're going to try and at disadvantage, [1120.8s] he's going to try and stealth away. [1123.7s] He does not. [1125.4s] So he now sees you in front of him. [1128.0s] He is going to try and... [1132.8s] He's going to try and... [1133.6s] She's going to take these 30 feet of movement, [1135.8s] but he's going to try and shove you as he moves by. [1137.9s] So he'll move 15, shove, and then try and go. [1140.9s] So this is going to be straight strength against your ac, [1146.4s] which is not going to be good. [1147.9s] So that's a nine. [1149.9s] So he runs into you. [1154.5s] How do you stop him? [1156.8s] I think I have my shield out. [1159.5s] Margaret is a mark of the sentinel. [1162.3s] And so she just puts the shield out and plants it down. [1164.8s] So he runs directly into it. [1166.6s] Kind of like he's barreled down his shoulder [1169.8s] like he was trying to plow into you [1171.9s] and just glances up and off and falls to the ground, [1176.1s] just off to the side as everybody else catches up. [1179.1s] And the chase is over. [1181.1s] Oh, God. [1189.1s] Didn't mean to interrupt you. [1190.2s] I think we've got a couple of questions for you. [1192.0s] Oh, who do you think you are stopping people like me? [1196.5s] Oh, nice to meet you. [1198.2s] My name is Margaret Broadcloak. [1199.9s] I've got some friends here who seem to recognize you. [1202.9s] And boy, it sure seems like you recognized him as well. [1206.2s] I don't know what you're talking about. [1207.9s] And then as he turns and sees Lex come up, [1210.3s] oh, yeah, that's your friend? [1216.3s] That's correct. [1217.1s] That's your friend. [1218.2s] Okay, I'm just going to just stand right here. [1220.9s] I'll just stand right here just beside this. [1223.6s] Hey, so Lex now. [1228.0s] Yes, Lex is my name now. [1230.3s] Pleasure to meet you, Lex Marvam. [1233.1s] Marvam, that's me. [1234.7s] That's what my friends call me. [1236.9s] I don't think we're meeting for the first time. [1239.5s] You know me. [1241.4s] I mean, I've seen you around, you know, it's just. [1246.8s] Maybe about two years ago. [1248.2s] Maybe about two years ago. [1251.2s] Would you say you saw me like this or sort of more separate? [1257.5s] Well, I mean, you know, who's to say really what? [1262.2s] I mean, a little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. [1264.5s] I might have been around when they kind of put you together. [1269.7s] And then, you know, I mean, you know, bring pieces and stuff. [1276.1s] Anyways, long story short, how you been? [1279.7s] What you been up to? [1280.7s] It's good to see you. [1283.2s] I don't know that you mean that, but I've been well. [1286.5s] I have these friends now. [1288.2s] Yeah, I've come very spry to meet my creator. [1292.4s] Oh, cool. [1297.0s] What can you tell me? [1298.7s] What about my creator? [1301.9s] You know, what do you? [1303.1s] What is a creator? [1304.1s] What are you trying to do here? [1305.1s] You're trying to like, like intimidate. [1307.5s] I just want him to like, tell me some stuff about the dude. [1310.4s] Yeah, you roll. [1311.1s] You roll me a skill and then we'll that'll dictate how he responds. [1315.6s] I think intimidation. [1317.1s] No, well, not great. [1318.2s] Eleven. [1321.4s] I'm just so winded. [1322.6s] It's really, I just. [1324.4s] Hey, hey, look, once you get yourself [1327.8s] collected here, maybe we can have a few drinks. [1329.9s] I'm just going to go. [1330.7s] I'm just going to check on some things back at the old homestead. [1335.4s] No, you are definitely not leaving here without giving me some information [1341.1s] and maybe just guiding my friends and I to where my creator is. [1344.9s] Yeah, yeah, I get it. [1346.4s] I get it. [1349.8s] Mountains up there. [1351.5s] He's starting to take a few steps back there. [1353.4s] Margaret and Perseus as Arvid kind of finally makes it up and says, [1356.8s] oh, that that guard was just delightful. [1360.7s] Confused me for some other person. [1365.2s] Well, you do have that look. [1366.7s] Don't you just have one of those faces looks so familiar. [1369.9s] Thank you for saying so. [1372.2s] Perseus pulls out his dagger and kind of starts to point it at Marvam. [1377.1s] Oh, hey, yeah, wait a second here, buds. [1380.7s] We don't need to pull out any weapons. [1383.5s] You just look like you might have been going somewhere [1385.6s] and I don't think you should be going somewhere right now. [1387.6s] Roll an intimidation there, Perseus. [1390.2s] Oh, I would love to. [1392.6s] Oh, well, it's going to be good. [1394.3s] Uh, what's the bonus? [1396.3s] Oh, fuck, it's a 23. [1398.7s] Look, I wasn't a scared of the big guy because I knew where to pull the stitches [1402.3s] to just make his arms go all flippy dippy. [1404.5s] But you you look like you've been in some battles there, friend. [1407.8s] And he walks over to you and kind of just like pushes your knife just to the side here [1411.6s] and says, look, you know, we can get to know each other. [1413.9s] We can be friends. [1415.6s] We don't have to fight. [1417.6s] And I hold my other free hand close up to his face [1423.3s] and it's like dancing electricity is on my fingers. [1427.1s] Oh, that's cool. [1432.2s] We cut to a tavern later. [1437.9s] It says, so you want to meet your you want to meet your creator. [1442.5s] Yes, I want to know why I was made. [1445.1s] Why you were you were made as an experiment. [1448.7s] But for no purpose, just to see if he could do it. [1454.5s] Is he evil? [1455.2s] He's evil, right? [1456.3s] No, he's got to be evil. [1457.7s] I mean, he sounds a little evil. [1459.0s] No, don't don't don't look not. [1463.6s] He's not evil. [1465.5s] He he was trying out some things [1472.3s] because he was getting in good with with this guy who, you know, [1476.4s] I told him he was kind of evil. [1480.0s] He's like he was trying to just, you know, [1481.9s] make a push forward in this in this new organization, [1484.8s] trying to make a way for himself, putting pieces together, [1489.1s] as you know, seeing if he could bring them back. [1493.7s] That's how you came about. [1495.1s] You were kind of his golden child. [1500.0s] More of a mottled gray child, I think. [1502.7s] But I see your point. [1504.3s] What what organization? [1510.0s] The strict name of it was never exactly divulged [1513.5s] to your good buddy Marvam over here. [1516.2s] He he just told me to go out and collect parts. [1519.2s] So that's what I did. [1520.4s] I went out and I dug some things up and found some things [1523.9s] and I stole some things and, you know, slice and dice. [1526.9s] And then you got pieces to put together a jigsaw. [1532.6s] I mean, this is a very blase attitude from you, Marvam. [1535.1s] But I see that you perhaps are just [1539.8s] you weren't the the brains of the operation, right? [1543.9s] You were just just a worker bee. [1546.4s] Yeah, yeah, a worker bee, right? [1548.5s] And he nudges Perseus. [1549.8s] He's like, you get it. [1552.2s] I don't really know what a bee is. [1554.8s] How about you? [1555.4s] Lady with the shield, you're very fast. [1560.2s] You strike me as the type of person who [1563.5s] doesn't really work for for loyalty or for fame, [1568.3s] but for coin. [1570.0s] What if I was just to offer you a number of coins [1572.6s] to walk us back to the place [1574.0s] you delivered the things you collected? [1576.0s] Oh, well, now we're speaking my language here. [1579.1s] You see, I had a feeling we might be. [1581.9s] What kind of coins are we talking here? [1584.0s] These like these like high value, [1586.3s] highfalutin, high weighted coins. [1589.9s] I mean, that looks like a good looking shield [1591.9s] you got there probably cost a pretty penny. [1595.0s] It's true. [1595.5s] I make the rounds around various cities, [1599.2s] helping them out and collecting a little money [1601.1s] here and there. [1601.7s] I'm sure you can be more than aptly compensated. [1604.5s] Interesting, interesting. [1606.3s] All right. [1606.7s] Well, I mean, if the if the price is right, [1609.0s] maybe we can just visit there. [1610.5s] I mean, you know, who am I to stand [1612.8s] in front of a family reunion? [1615.4s] Exactly. [1615.9s] You're just helping bring a family back together. [1619.1s] Who could fault you for that? [1620.7s] You know what? [1621.3s] That's what they say on my business cards [1623.7s] is bring in family together. [1625.6s] Marvam Dundalfoot, Marvam Dundalfoot, [1630.4s] bring in families together. [1634.9s] Let's point the slogan. [1636.6s] You know, it's really catching fire here. [1639.1s] Marvam, do you know we've been dancing around it, [1642.6s] but what is the name of my creator? [1645.2s] He don't even remember the name of the guy [1647.9s] who created you. [1649.5s] How did you make it back this far? [1653.3s] Well, when I left, I recognized the things [1657.3s] that, you know, I woke up, [1660.3s] there was no one there. [1661.3s] I escaped. [1663.5s] I have vague kind of flashes, [1665.4s] but it's not like we sat down [1667.7s] and had a conversation and then I left. [1670.6s] You, well, I mean, you had many conversations. [1675.5s] You don't remember any of those? [1677.9s] It's not like he created you and you were gone. [1680.3s] Like you were around for a while [1682.2s] as he trained you and gave you your gifts, [1688.2s] as he says. [1691.3s] Well, I don't really remember that. [1696.2s] I mean, if I saw him, [1697.4s] maybe I would probably recognize him. [1699.5s] Or when I see the place, [1701.0s] I knew that I would recognize it, [1702.7s] but I don't remember spending quality time [1708.0s] with my creator. [1710.1s] All right. [1710.7s] It's his name is Nick O'Real Katie. [1718.1s] It's been a while since I've been up [1719.7s] to his establishment. [1722.3s] Haven't heard much of him. [1723.7s] You know, he doesn't have any runners [1725.5s] coming down lately. [1727.8s] So if you go up, [1731.0s] I'm not sure what you're walking into here. [1735.0s] You haven't been bringing him more? [1736.8s] He cut me a while ago, you know, [1738.6s] before you left. [1739.9s] Well, maybe he's had a change of heart. [1743.8s] Maybe, maybe. [1747.2s] All right. [1747.8s] Well, he looks around to the table. [1751.0s] He said, do we settle up now [1752.3s] or do we settle up then? [1758.2s] I assume that's then. [1759.9s] OK. [1761.3s] OK. [1764.1s] Does that count as a short rest mechanically? [1767.5s] I don't know how long a short rest is. [1770.1s] It depends what you all want to do. [1771.9s] Do you want to like spend the night [1773.6s] and then go up in the morning? [1775.0s] You kind of will call it like, [1776.8s] you know, mid afternoon [1778.8s] when you were starting [1779.8s] this chase interrogation thing. [1782.9s] We could spend the night, [1783.9s] go fresh in the morning. [1785.2s] I guess we have to keep him with us, though. [1787.7s] Yeah. [1788.6s] He's a real shady character. [1789.9s] Yeah. [1790.6s] Maybe we should go now [1791.7s] while we've got him in hand. [1793.7s] Yeah. [1794.4s] I don't want to pay for him [1795.4s] to stay at an inn with us. [1796.9s] That's true. [1798.3s] And nobody wants to share a room with him. [1800.3s] No. [1800.7s] No. [1802.5s] Yeah, we could definitely call it [1804.3s] a short rest. [1807.9s] You set out same day [1810.0s] being led by [1812.3s] Marvam. [1813.7s] And you head up into the Baldrick Mountains. [1817.1s] They are cascading, [1820.3s] tall mountains [1821.6s] that stretch the expanse of Fay, [1824.1s] which is the country you are in. [1829.6s] You are led deep within these mountains [1832.8s] following a winding path. [1835.3s] There aren't many, [1836.5s] any people that you see coming or going. [1842.9s] Yeah, it's just up around the bend here [1844.7s] to the mouth of the cave. [1848.4s] You've been traveling for [1851.1s] let's say four or five hours at this point. [1857.6s] You continue to travel [1858.8s] for another 30 minutes or so. [1862.0s] You round a bend [1863.2s] and you come to the mouth [1865.6s] of this wide open cave. [1867.0s] You've traveled up and into [1868.6s] to one of the mountains [1873.7s] nearest to the city. [1876.6s] Says, you go in there, [1879.8s] kind of go to the back. [1881.0s] He's got a door. [1885.3s] I don't know if the knock still works. [1886.8s] It's like a rick-a-dick-a-dick-a-dick-dick, you know? [1890.4s] Well, maybe you should come and show us. [1892.0s] Ah, okay. [1892.7s] Yeah, sure. [1894.8s] Okay. [1896.8s] Got it. [1899.4s] You all proceed into the mouth of the cave. [1904.1s] And everybody has dark vision, I presume? [1908.4s] Sure. [1910.2s] Or you're a human, aren't you, Margaret? [1912.2s] I am. [1913.7s] My mace gives off light. [1915.1s] Okay, perfect. [1917.0s] Margaret thinks of everything. [1920.8s] As it gets to be too beginning to get [1924.1s] like dim and like, you know, [1926.7s] where you're straining to see, Margaret, [1928.5s] you pull out your mace and illuminate the area. [1932.0s] The light spins out and everybody you see [1936.8s] bones kind of pushed up and off to the side. [1940.4s] Like they've been almost like swept off to the side [1944.4s] of various creatures and humans [1949.6s] and different humanoids. [1952.9s] They're in a bundled mess, [1955.1s] not like somebody sat down and just died there [1957.2s] and then that's where their skeletons are, [1959.2s] but just in a bundled mess. [1960.8s] And the further back you go, [1963.1s] like Marvam said, you reach a door. [1969.4s] It's almost like this cave was carved into this mountain [1972.4s] and then it reaches a flat face [1974.4s] and then there's a stone door with a handle. [1979.8s] He says, [1980.3s] uh, just knock. [1986.4s] You want me to knock? [1987.7s] Yes. [1989.8s] You said you know the knock. [1991.6s] Okay. [1994.4s] Okay. [1995.0s] Yeah, I mean, you're the adventuring types. [1996.8s] All right. [1998.1s] He knocks. [2003.6s] He stands there kind of scuffing his feet, [2007.2s] looking around at everybody. [2009.5s] So, any good stories anybody wants to tell while we wait here? [2019.4s] Was it usually a long wait when you knocked? [2022.0s] Ah, not usually this long. [2024.9s] Looks like maybe some people, [2027.0s] some runners have expired in these here caves. [2031.2s] Not usually such a clutter of bones. [2036.2s] I mean, as new as bones can be. [2039.2s] I mean, they weren't here when you were coming regularly? [2042.5s] Not previously. [2043.4s] Like I said, you know, [2044.8s] around the time that you went poof a couple years ago, [2049.3s] give or take, that's the last time I was here. [2051.5s] So he's just maybe doing a new decoration thing. [2055.7s] You know, I'm just going to try the door. [2057.2s] I'm just going to see what happens. [2059.7s] And he reaches for the door and tries to pull on it [2064.7s] and it doesn't open. [2065.6s] So, all this way just to come to a locked door. [2071.7s] Ha, what a story to tell your kids later. [2075.0s] Can you have kids? [2076.1s] I don't even know if that's possible. [2078.4s] I'd like to reach into my, like, [2082.8s] adventuring sack that I imagine I have with me. [2086.3s] Okay. [2087.6s] And I pull out a hollow metal tube [2090.5s] that measures about one foot long. [2092.4s] And without knowing really what I'm doing, [2097.6s] just just like this otherworldly power [2100.2s] is kind of guiding my hand. [2102.4s] I strike it and point it at the door [2108.8s] and a tone issues out from it. [2115.0s] And if the door is locked, it should now be unlocked. [2119.2s] Is it knock? [2120.0s] Is that what you guessed? [2121.3s] I use my wondrous item, Chime of Opening. [2125.0s] Ooh, fancy. [2130.4s] Perfect, yeah. [2131.2s] It rings out and you hear from the door [2135.7s] just like this movement of stone. [2140.0s] And then it kind of cracks open [2142.2s] and there's a, it doesn't have hinges so to speak, [2145.4s] but it kind of slides open and like scrapes along the floor [2148.7s] and is like, wow, I got it gets me one of those. [2151.9s] Where'd you get it there, friend? [2154.0s] I'm not really sure. [2155.2s] Arvid, did you, did you cook this up for me? [2159.4s] Yes, yes I did. [2162.7s] Well, it's pretty handy. [2164.8s] You're so thoughtful, Arvid. [2166.8s] That's why I gave it to him, really. [2170.0s] Because I knew we'd need to open the door at some point. [2173.0s] You're so smart. [2173.6s] As if by some knowledge that, thank you, thank you. [2178.1s] Incredible foresight to know [2180.3s] that somehow we'd need to open a door. [2183.6s] I mean, I've been on a few adventures [2185.8s] and there's usually a door in the way. [2187.8s] Okay, okay. [2189.7s] Lovebirds, I see, they're just gonna pull the door open. [2194.4s] After you. [2195.6s] He pulls the door and it grinds open [2199.2s] and it's into a dark hallway that extends down before you. [2203.2s] You don't see any person or any creatures in your way. [2206.0s] Okay, what do you do? [2208.8s] Can I, I'm gonna do a perception check to see. [2211.6s] I mean, we got the door open now, [2212.8s] but just to make sure there's not, you know, [2215.2s] a big old trap immediately. [2219.0s] Uh, 14? [2223.6s] It appears to be entirely safe. [2227.6s] Well, we've come all this way. [2228.8s] I'm going in. [2230.3s] Yes, yes, after you. [2231.6s] All right, friends first, here we go. [2234.4s] He's kind of waving everybody by. [2236.7s] I mean, we understand you're just gonna leave now. [2238.9s] You don't need to. [2240.0s] I still need my payment. [2241.1s] We said I'd be paid then. [2242.5s] So I mean, I gotta wait around. [2245.6s] Maybe I'll just keep the door open. [2248.0s] Yes, that's fair. [2248.7s] You can count half your coins while you wait. [2250.9s] Perfect. [2251.6s] Thank you. [2252.6s] And I'll hand him a little, a little pouch. [2255.9s] Oh, would you look at these here? [2257.5s] Yeah, key onesies, twosies. [2260.5s] And as you walk down the hall, [2262.0s] you hear him counting them out. [2263.6s] I'll just wait here for you. [2265.1s] No worries. [2273.1s] Hey now, we're in the middle. [2275.1s] We're talking all about the things. [2278.6s] Oh, it started so strong. [2280.3s] It didn't start off really good. [2281.9s] It started so strong. [2283.5s] Hey now, we're in the middle. [2285.2s] We're talking about the things. [2288.9s] I feel like the lyrics were what were good the first time. [2292.7s] Yeah, it's the lyrics that were not the problem. [2298.8s] Yeah, the tune was great. [2300.1s] I know. [2300.8s] Hey now, it's the middle. [2302.8s] Come and join us. [2304.3s] Hang in. [2305.4s] Okay, you're better at things than I am. [2311.0s] Amy can rap and just like put random lyrics into any song. [2315.6s] You know what? [2316.3s] It's not a skill that comes in handy as much as you think it would. [2319.9s] Wow, see, I thought you'd be like making mad coin off that. [2322.8s] I know. [2323.7s] It's just kind of sitting unused except for every once in a while here in the middle. [2328.8s] And we're in it. [2329.7s] What are we talking about today? [2331.4s] Stuff. [2332.1s] Probably Patreon. [2333.3s] Patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast is a place where you can go listen to a really cool. [2340.6s] Amy's dying. [2345.2s] That's what you lose your shit at. [2347.8s] It's because in my head he said Patreon.com slash dumb dragon teats. [2354.0s] It sounded like dunk dragons. [2360.8s] Which doesn't make sense for this because they're not going to overheard it yet. [2364.6s] So dumb dragon teats means nothing. [2366.4s] When you hear the episode that we just recorded, it's a side scroller episode. [2371.0s] You'll be able to piece this energy that we've got going on to the exact recording. [2376.3s] Yeah, if you've been on the fence, if you've been on the fence about joining Patreon, [2382.1s] I gotta say Russ really brought a pretty unique energy to the game we just recorded. [2387.4s] And I'd really love it if you could listen to it because if you're a Patreon, [2391.0s] then you can listen to all these extra games that we play. [2394.0s] And some of them are pretty weird. [2395.9s] You're going to see a different side of Russ. [2398.3s] If you like DM side, you're going to see character side and go, [2403.6s] the hell is going on here? [2406.8s] What happens when Tom yes ends everything Russ says in an episode? [2411.9s] I didn't have a lot of prep, so there was a lot of yes ending. [2416.9s] It's true. [2417.4s] He showed us his notes. [2419.1s] Where we don't prep many things, Patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast. [2424.4s] Long story short, we do have another podcast over there called The Adventures of. [2428.4s] It is DM'd by Tom Laird. [2430.1s] And he lets me go a little bit bonkers in that. [2434.0s] He just announced that we go hard on him, so I'm going to let him do whatever he wants, [2438.0s] which is great until we get to the point where we're at now [2441.9s] where I can't say because nobody's listening to it. [2443.9s] Even Carla and I can't really rein him in. [2446.3s] He's impossible. [2447.6s] It's a good thing he DMs all the time. [2449.4s] Tom tried there for a minute with some characters and it just [2452.8s] steamrolled over top of them too. [2454.5s] Just couldn't stand up to it. [2455.8s] Rules are there ain't no rules. [2457.2s] Exactly. [2458.0s] Patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast. [2460.4s] We hope to see you over there. [2461.8s] Not only for that show, but we do some great hangouts. [2464.0s] We play some games. [2464.9s] We get to know you, our listeners and our patrons. [2468.2s] And we have a lot of fun over there. [2469.9s] So we hope to see you. [2472.0s] And now let's get back to the episode where Lex and Margaret and Arvid and [2478.0s] Perseus are doing some wild and crazy things. [2480.8s] Love you. [2481.1s] Bye. [2481.7s] Okay, bye. [2482.2s] Thank you, Margaret, for that. [2488.6s] Yes, of course. [2491.6s] This does all seem familiar. [2494.6s] I've been here. [2495.6s] This is, I mean, I knew when I saw Marvin, but this is the place. [2500.8s] Do you have any memory of coming through this corridor or? [2507.8s] I mean, yes, flashes, but was that me? [2511.6s] Was that the parts of me? [2514.0s] I do have memories of that. [2517.1s] It's hard to say. [2518.0s] Everything is such a blur and a jumble. [2522.1s] As you walk down the halls, there are a series of doors that are opened up. [2527.6s] And it looks like this place hasn't been well kept up for quite some time. [2535.9s] It's, you're not sure. [2537.4s] There's no, I think the dust is thick along the floor. [2541.2s] The dirt is thick along the floor. [2542.6s] There's no footsteps except for the ones that you're making. [2546.5s] Doorways along the hall that you're walking down and offshoots. [2551.6s] You see into a couple and it, the first one you look into is [2558.0s] more or less like a sitting, eating room. [2561.1s] Lex, you have flashes of a fire illuminated in the middle of this room, [2570.1s] where there are just long since burned out embers. [2576.4s] You're seated around with several people, not just one, not just Marvam, [2582.4s] not just your creator, Nick O'Real, but many people in this place. [2593.8s] This is all familiar. [2594.8s] I remember now we were in this room and there were several people, [2598.7s] some in a uniform, just some regular looking folks and Nick O'Real, I remember his face now. [2608.8s] Russ, do I remember like in this building, if I was here, like what I remember where, [2616.8s] I don't know, like where his room is or where the, [2619.7s] where's the TV room? [2620.8s] Like, where is he chilling? [2622.4s] Yeah. [2623.7s] Yeah, you do, the further in you go and the more flashes you get room by room, [2630.5s] you get a clearer image of Nick O'Real and you get a clearer sense of who he was to you [2637.7s] and what he was to you. [2640.5s] The further in you go, each room flashes, you have interactions with people [2647.2s] who work there or who did work there rather. [2652.0s] You get flashes of people who were similar to you in a way, pieces of people, [2663.7s] but none that exhibit the same interaction level that you had. [2670.1s] Like you were almost tasked to work with these new [2674.5s] people, for lack of a better term, to try and coax something out of them. [2680.1s] Like you see that as you walk through, you see kind of more medical-like facilities. [2685.4s] They're not medical because you're in a cave, but that seems to be what these rooms were like. [2690.9s] Everybody else, as Lex is describing these scenes to you, you see like broken down [2697.3s] tables and equipment, long since expired or dried up medicinal or magical items. [2711.8s] And Lex, your feeling of Nick O'Real is not one of hatred the further in you go. [2721.0s] The deeper you go, the more fatherly you remember him being. [2730.9s] You see his face, he's a taller man, a little heavier set, round face, [2738.7s] balding white hair that flows long down. [2746.1s] And you see his smile the longer you're here. [2750.8s] And it brings a certain warmth to your normally cold demeanor, [2756.4s] not your demeanor is cold, but normally cold body. [2764.1s] I remember him now not with anger or even confusion. [2771.9s] I remember him being kind to me. [2780.5s] Do you remember why you left? [2785.0s] I don't. I remember there were others like me and we were sort of working together. [2791.3s] And now that I'm here, I don't have these. [2794.6s] I thought I would get here and I would feel angry and I would feel vengeful. [2802.0s] But now I just have sort of warm memories of him and that's it. [2809.8s] I don't know, I can't trust my own memories because they're so sporadic, [2814.7s] but maybe he wasn't an evil man. [2820.9s] Although there is some inherent evil in what he did. [2826.4s] Well, perhaps if we dig a little further through here, [2829.4s] you might find something as to why maybe it was for, [2832.9s] you know, bad, what's the phrase, bad intentions towards a good end. [2842.4s] Perhaps. [2845.0s] As you're all walking through, I presume you're walking with, [2850.7s] you know, keeping aware of your surroundings and stuff, not just waltzing through. [2856.8s] Yeah, I think, yeah, I'm like pretty like looking at things and even kind of like [2860.6s] touching the walls, trying to like, as things are coming back to me. [2864.5s] Yeah. [2864.6s] And even detecting magic every now and then just to see if anything here still seems to be [2869.7s] potent at all. [2871.1s] Margaret, as you're detecting magic, you know, very early on, [2877.5s] everything's like there's nothing there. [2879.4s] Like it's just a cold, empty room, cold empty rooms in the side of a mountain. [2885.5s] The deeper in you all go into this mountainside, [2891.0s] Lex, you start to get a feeling that you are nearing Nick O'Real's office or quarters [2901.3s] or a common gathering place. [2904.6s] And Margaret, you get a sense of as you enter this last room, all of you [2913.5s] at the end of this long winding hallway through this facility, [2917.3s] you sense kind of in this room that's coming up, it's dark, dimly, well, dimly lit based on your [2925.9s] light, you can't quite make out everything that's in there, you see shadows, but you [2931.3s] also get a sense of kind of an illusory magic that's emanating from this room, not in a huge [2939.5s] strong wave, but in just kind of it's lingering throughout this room that's coming up, [2946.4s] but not anywhere else. [2949.3s] I'm reading something from this room coming up, just be careful when you go in. [2955.7s] I will. This was his study where he did all of his [2963.0s] thinking, his writing, I don't know, I remember him being in this room a lot. [2969.4s] And I'll open the door. [2971.7s] Lex, you walk through the door. Margaret, as Lex walks through the door, [2978.4s] there's this wave of illusory magic that just kind of spreads out and into the room and [2984.5s] everybody sees the wave kind of as it rolls through the room, it cleans it up. So it's [2991.8s] like the room was the same as every other room you passed, chairs and everything turned [2996.9s] over, covered in dirt and dust. But then as the illusion rolls over, it's like this [3002.5s] room is back together. And you see a man, an older man, seated in a large armchair by a [3016.9s] wood-burning fireplace. Seated in the chair beside him is Lex. [3026.9s] You see a scene play out in front of you. It's the two of you, Lex and Nikaril, [3033.7s] talking back and forth. You can't quite make out what they're saying. It's low, [3039.7s] drawn-out conversation. Everything is very above board, very warm, very encouraging. [3050.7s] Lex, you have memories that wash back of this conversation. And the gist of what Nikaril is [3058.4s] imparting with you is that you are special and meant to do good in this world. And he [3068.9s] tried to build you and build others like you in order to get in with a new [3079.7s] power, a new employer, he says, time and time again. He doesn't tell you who that is, [3089.8s] but he tells you he can't do it anymore. What he was hoping to do was to give you the [3096.1s] powers that you have, but not have them corrupt your new body. [3103.7s] As you interpret that, he doesn't want you to fall apart as you are able to cast these healing [3110.3s] spells. Some time passes in this conversation and there's a loud bang that is heard from [3120.7s] the direction of the hallway. Margaret, if you're still detecting magic, you can tell [3128.1s] that it's still part of whatever this illusion is. It's like it's captured a scene, a moment [3134.4s] in time. You hear echoing screams coming from down the hallway, footsteps running, [3143.4s] and Nikaril's face goes stark. He has a sense of like a quick urgency of panic. [3155.8s] Like the blood rushes from his face and he stands up and he pulls Lex and says, [3160.9s] you need to leave now. And he rushes out and down the hall and you see in rooms, [3172.5s] undead warriors, soldiers striking down others in this facility and he pushes past you. [3180.8s] You get into a fight as he ushers you down this hallway. [3186.1s] The scene leaves you, he sends you off, and he runs back to his chamber, closes and locks [3194.1s] the door behind him. He begins writing a note on a table. The door bursts open behind him [3205.1s] and in rush, six undead warriors. Swords and spears drawn, and in behind them, almost floats [3216.1s] a dark elf with long white hair. He doesn't say anything, but the look on Nikaril's face [3226.8s] with long white hair. [3231.1s] He doesn't say anything, but the look on Nikaril's face [3237.3s] is resolute. He knows what's about to happen. And as the warriors rush towards him, [3245.8s] a small smile, a smirk comes across this dark elf's face and the scene immediately cuts. [3256.2s] And you're back in this dust covered, tossed and turned room. [3265.8s] So I was wrong. I wasn't here for vengeance or maybe I do need vengeance, [3273.5s] but not against my creator, against those people that killed him. [3278.9s] And yes, it seemed like he created you to make things a little better in a situation [3287.5s] where he saw things going very badly. [3292.6s] Can we look and see if that note he was writing is [3296.9s] there? Yeah, everybody can make an investigation check. [3302.5s] I love investigating. 19. [3306.1s] 9. I'm too distraught. 16. [3313.7s] Perseus. Everybody begins looking through. Lex, you immediately go to the desk. [3321.7s] You don't find anything inside the drawers and strewn about, broken pens and torn up paper, [3328.6s] but nothing that was explicitly written on or you recognize from that scene. [3333.7s] Perseus, you begin searching through some piles off to the side, [3342.8s] some of which have been burnt up and you find a scrap of paper. It's been torn. It's been singed. [3351.9s] But the two line is too Lee. [3356.1s] Too Lee. And then it issues a list of people. [3366.6s] And at the top of that list, partially torn, says Thelonious Prims. [3378.5s] Well, my friends, I feel like my work here is now I think only just beginning. [3384.8s] I need to find this Thelonious Prims and get justice. [3392.7s] Well, I'm in. I don't know about about you others. [3396.9s] Oh, I'm happy to help. [3399.3s] Yes, this person seems to command just the type of thing I am, [3404.8s] well, still kicking around to deal with. [3406.6s] Well, Lex or Lee or Granger or whatever your name might be tomorrow. [3417.9s] Where to next? [3421.6s] I think we need to leave this place [3425.3s] and go back to that town and get some more information.
